Early Federal-era military accounting receipt acknowledging payment connected to the guard of a garrison, referencing Thomas Hunonson (surname variant possible) and a sum of £37. Written in brown iron-gall ink on laid paper, the document reflects routine militia financial administration in the immediate post-Revolutionary period.
Joseph Bloomfield (1753–1823), a Revolutionary War officer who served as captain and later major in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment, would go on to become Governor of New Jersey (1801–1802; 1803–1812), a brigadier general during the War of 1812, and a U.S. Congressman. Material from his early postwar career is considerably scarcer than his later gubernatorial documents and offers insight into the financial and organizational realities of state militia forces during the fragile transitional years preceding the adoption of the Constitution.
Dated 1787—the year of the Constitutional Convention—this piece represents an evocative survival of early American military record-keeping. Fragmentary with edge wear and fold separations, yet legible and boldly signed, with strong historical appeal as a military financial document executed by a future state governor.
