Sir Walter Besant (1836–1901) was an English novelist, historian, and social reformer. He gained wide popularity through his collaborative novels with James Rice, including Ready-Money Mortiboy (1872) and The Golden Butterfly (1876), and later achieved major success with All Sorts and Conditions of Men (1882). Besant was also an important advocate for authors’ rights and helped found the Society of Authors, serving as its first chairman. His writings and public work contributed significantly to literary culture and social reform in late Victorian Britain.
