Walt Whitman to the Editor

Walt Whitman autograph. Signed paper or envelope front addressed to the editor of Century Magazine, in which Whitman published numerous works. Paper with signature: 3.25 x 6in. Framed under glass. Overall: 15 x 11.5in. Charles Hamilton Autographs, Inc. authentication and seal on reverse.

The inscription was written to Richard Watson Gilder(1844–1909) considered Gilder one of the "always sane men in the general madness" of "that New York art delirium" (Horace Traubel, With Walt Whitman in Camden, Sunday, August 5, 1888). Richard Watson Gilder was the managing editor and then editor of the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. Founded in 1870 as Scribner's Monthly, it was renamed the Century with a change in management in 1881. The Century was one of the nation's most esteemed periodicals, and as its editor Gilder was one of the most influential men in American letters.
