"[SEIZE] ALL GERMANY'S INTERNED SHIPS" ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, to Irving Putnam, offering his opinion on how the U.S. should respond to German aggression. 1 page, 4to; short separations at folds, minor scattered staining. (TFC) Syracuse, 12 May 1915 ". . . What the Germans really would mind, . . . would be, not a withdrawal of our ambassadors, but what I have advocated in print--refusal, in view of their conduct, to permit trade with them, and the throwing wide open of trade . . . to the other civilized nations . . . . Of course, if necessary, we could follow it up by seizing all their interned ships."
