Inscribed and signed in red ink: "With all best wishes, Ted Nelson." Nelson coined the words "hypertext" and "hypermedia" in 1965 and founded Project Xanadu, a forerunner of the World Wide Web; his book "Computer Lib/Dream Machines" (1974) was a manifesto of the personal computer movement. (4) Thor Heyerdahl Signed Photograph, Together with His Typed Postcard Signed, Italy, October 3, 1979, on the Easter Island Statues, "Kon-Tiki" Explorer. Two pieces from the Norwegian explorer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl. (1) Black and white portrait photograph of Heyerdahl in profile, wearing a white roll-neck sweater against a clear sky, boldly signed "Thor Heyerdahl" in blue ink across the lower portion. (2) Typed postcard signed "Thor Heyerdahl", dated "Italy, Oct. 3.79", to Mr. Morgan of Chesapeake, Virginia: "The question you pose in your letter concerning the Easter Island statues are dealt with in detail in my book THE ART OF EASTER ISLAND, and more briefly in a chapter in EARLY MAN AND THE OCEAN, both published by Doubleday in New York. With kind regards." The address side carries two Italian stamps with a Mendatica (IM) postmark of 4 October 1979. Mendatica is near Colla Micheri in Liguria, the medieval hamlet Heyerdahl restored as his home. Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific on the balsa raft Kon-Tiki in 1947 to test his theory of South American settlement of Polynesia, and later led archaeological expeditions to Easter Island; this card answers a question on exactly that subject.
