The letter references preparations for his Antarctic Expedition and expresses appreciation for donated supplies, offering a direct and tangible connection to Byrd’s second Antarctic expedition period.
Accompanied by two photographs, including an 8" x 10" original image of Byrd in polar gear handling small flags, and a second 3.5" x 4.5" signed image by “Bill McCormick.” Condition is good, with expected mailing folds to the letter, light edge wear, and minor handling wear to the photographs.
Richard Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer, pioneering aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica.
Bill McCormick is the world’s senior Antarctic support aviator. He flew with Admiral Byrd during first winter-over at South Pole.
