Rare and visually striking April 8, 1887 printed program for the “Twenty Second Anniversary” of Appomattox, held at the Hotel Rennert in Baltimore, prominently signed across the face by Mark Twain in bold pencil, “Yours Truly Mark Twain.”
The reverse bears an additional handwritten inscription, reading in full: “To my little unknown friend (with best regards & good wishes) Julia F. McKellips. Yours Truly Mark Twain. April ’87.” What a nice personal inscription.
An exceptional association piece tied to Civil War remembrance, with the printed headings “Appomattox, 1865” and “Baltimore, 1887”. Measures approximately 6.5" x 5". Expected age-related wear, including toning, edge chipping, scattered staining, and small holes.
Samuel Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, and essayist. He was praised as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," with William Faulkner calling him "the father of American literature." Twain's novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), with the latter often called the "Great American Novel."
