Unusual Vietnam inscription in The Long Valley stories by John Steinbeck written while in Saigon. “For Chuck Rumer inscribed under ridiculous conditions in Saigon at the Jolly Yule –Tide and how can one get sillier than that John Steinbeck, Saigon 1966.” Viking Press / Compass Books Edition, New York, 1956. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Very good and tight copy. Sixth printing of the Compass Books edition (1964). Price of $1.45 on covers. Between December 1966 and May 1967, the sixty-four-year-old Steinbeck toured the major combat areas of South Vietnam and traveled to the north of Thailand and into Laos, documenting his experiences in a series of columns titled Letters to Alicia, in reference to Newsday publisher Harry F. Guggenheim’s deceased wife.
