(May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist and journalist. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass.
Signed invitation Apil 15,1887, a reception for Whitman was held at the Westminister Hotel in New York. Whitman spent the 1y at Madison Square Theater lecturing about Lincoln. Signed on back by long time companion and house keeper Mary 1vis , Whitman's companion. Also included, is a letter written to 1vis and Whitman from, one of his major English diciples John Johnston. Great collection!
