An exceptional pairing of a handwritten, signed letter by celebrated French author Victor Hugo, alongside an 1872 rare carte-de-visite photograph by d'Arsène Garnier of Victor Hugo with his grandchildren George and Jeanne, taken during his exile in Guernsey.
The letter, dated 7 March and signed boldly "Victor Hugo", measures 4" × 5.25" and is addressed to a fellow writer. Hugo praises the poetry of Georges Nazim and extends a warm invitation to dinner, offering insight into his generous and convivial nature. A personal note continues on the reverse, further affirming his admiration.
Accompanying the letter is a vintage albumen photograph measuring 2.5" × 3.75", by Garnier Arsène of Guernsey, depicting Hugo seated affectionately with two young children. The reverse bears the red studio stamp and is inscribed "Victor Hugo" in period ink.

During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote in a variety of genres and forms. His most famous works are the novels The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).
