John Pentland Mahaffy Signed Photograph. Vintage sepia-toned photographic portrait by the noted studio Lafayette Ltd., signed in the lower margin, “J. C. Mahaffy.” The distinguished profile portrait depicts the Irish classical scholar and historian seated and facing slightly to the side, dressed in formal attire typical of the late Victorian period. Studio imprint “Lafayette Ltd.” appears at lower left, with studio locations “London, Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester & Belfast” printed at lower right. Photograph measures approximately 6.5" x 9" and is mounted to a larger studio mount measuring approximately 9" x 12.75".

John Pentland Mahaffy (1839–1919) was an Irish classicist, historian, and scholar who served as Professor of Ancient History at Trinity College Dublin. A prolific writer, he produced numerous works on Greek history, literature, and culture, including Social Life in Greece from Homer to Menander (1874) and Greek Life and Thought (1887). Mahaffy was also known as a mentor to Oscar Wilde, whose early intellectual development he influenced during Wilde’s years at Trinity College.
