Hamilton Fish

Autograph letter signed “Hamilton Fish,” two pages, 4.75" x 8", Washington, June 2, 1865. Writing to J. Apoleon Cheney shortly after the close of the Civil War, Fish expresses gratitude for a note of congratulations and its complimentary sentiments: “I beg to return you my thanks for your very kind note of 29th, and for the flattering enclosure which it contains… I shall endeavor to prove not unworthy of your good opinion.” Boldly signed at the conclusion, “Hamilton Fish.” Light toning and folds, overall fine condition.

Hamilton Fish was an American politician who served as the 16th Governor of New York from 1849 to 1850, a United States Senator from New York from 1851 to 1857, and the 26th United States Secretary of State from 1869 to 1877. Fish is recognized as the "pillar" of the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant and considered one of the best U.S. Secretaries of State by scholars, known for his judiciousness and efforts towards reform and diplomatic moderation.
