Front-and-back airmail cover bearing an illustrated Michigan Air Trophy Race cachet, franked with a pair of 3¢ Washington stamps and postmarked at Mt. Clemens, Michigan, September 26, 1935. The cover was conceived and sponsored by T/Sgt. Paul Grossmann, identified as Artist, of the 94th Pursuit Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, who circulated it among the senior officers of Selfridge Field for signature.
Signers include Lt. Col. Ralph Royce, Commanding Officer, 1st Pursuit Group, and later a WWII theater commander who rose to Major General; Maj. W. A. Maxwell; Capt. Dixon M. Allison; Capt. Paul U. George, later Maj. Gen. and commander of I Fighter Command; and approximately a dozen additional Air Corps officers. Also present is a signature reading "Capt. C. [or G.] S. Chennault, A.C." No officer of that surname other than Claire Lee Chennault has been identified in Air Corps records of this period, and the signing of race cachets was consistent with Chennault's documented habits during these years.
