EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. (1890-1969). American soldier and thirty-fourth president of the United States. ILS. ('Dwight D. Eisenhower'). 1p. 4to. Washington, DC, May 8, 1953. On White House stationery.
To GEORGE PLATT BRETT, JR. (1893-1984), President of Macmillan Publishing. "I have enjoyed glancing at the Story of the Presidents by Maud and Miska Petersham. Thank you very much for making it available to me - and to the grandchildren. They should be up to enjoying it themselves in a few years."
Our letter thanks the head of MacMillan Publishing for a book illustrated by American artist Maud Petersham (1890-1971) and Hungarian illustrator Mika Petersham (1888-1960), a couple famous for their award-winning illustrated children's books written between 1917 and 1958.
Brett is remembered in the publishing world for securing the rights to Gone With the Wind, which sold one million copies in the first six months after its publication in 1936 - at the time, the biggest-selling novel in the history of U.S. publishing.
Eisenhower was elected president during the tense Cold War years. His leadership experience in World War II and, afterward, as commander of the NATO forces, left him with no doubt about the importance of military power. At the same time, however, he used diplomacy to navigate the difficulties of the time, earning him a second term as president.
Attractively framed with a portrait of the president and is in very good condition.
