Own letters not only held and read by Washington but also with his writing dated 1781! Two late 18th-century letters to 'His Excellency General Washington'. (1) First is handwritten 9"x7" letter dated 'Philad(elphia) Aug. 1st, 1782' signed 'Smith, Clarkson' and seeking 'active service' upon 'the arrival of a French Fleet upon the Coast'. Folded, tiny ink smear in upper left corner, minor chipping at edges, a little separation at two folds. (2) Four 7"x3" panels of 1781 handwritten letter from John Mercer to 'His Excellency General Washington' requesting repayment of loan made to further the purposes of the revolution, docketed 'John Mercer 20th Mar. 1781' in Washington's hand. Yellowed paper with burned edges & other minor damage, still quite readable. Interesting lot.
