"Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette delivered at the request of both houses of the Congress of the United States before them in the House of Representatives at Washington on the 31 st December, 1834 by John Quincy Adams, a member of he House". First Edition, one of a limited number of specially bound, thick paper presentation copies, inscribed and signed by Adams in ink and inserted blank prior to the title leaf. Adams was out of the country when the book was published, so he signed a number of these leaves in advance to be bound in. This was one of a few copies bearing presentation to someone other than members of Congress. It was inscribed to Walter Franklin, perhaps the Pennsylvania jurist of that name. Condition does have some scuffing to cover, some age toning spots inside, although binding is tight and signature and inscription is in good condition as well as inside pages.
