Monroe introduces persecuted British Unitarian minister Harry Toulmin who has just immigrated to America “in the hope of enjoying more rights of religious & civil liberty denied him” in England
Autograph Letter Signed “Jas. Monroe,” 1p, 7.25” x 9.25”. Philadelphia, April 3, 1794. Integral leaf addressed by Monroe to “The honble / Robt. R. Livingston Esqr / New York,” noted “Favd by the / Revd. Mr. Toulman [sic].” Repaired at right edge affecting one letter, toned from prior framing. Seal tear on integral leaf. On watermarked laid paper. Fine condition.
In full, “Permit me to present to yr acquaintance the bearer the revd Mr Toulman lately from Engld. who has imigrated here in the hope of enjoying more rights of religious & civil liberty wh are denied him in the other. He is connected with and in society with Dr. Priestl[y.] You will find him in every respect deserving yr attention with which view I have taken the liberty of making him known to you. With great respect & esteem I am Dr Sir sincerely yrs. Jas. Monroe.”
