"Life of Franklin Pierce" by Nathaniel Hawthorne inscribed "For Washington McLean from Frank Pierce, Concord, N. H. Feb. 5 1853. McLean was a businessman who was quite active in the Democratic party. This book was a campaign biography written by Hawthorne, Pierce's friend at Bowdoin College. Another interesting and rare signed book. 16mo, 144 pages. Brown cloth over boards with blind stamped border and floral decoration and titles in gilt on the spine. . Bumped corners; light shelfwear. Pierce first met author Nathaniel Hawthorne at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in the fall of 1820. Both men had joined a literary group, the Athenian Society, and became close friends.
