Sir Henry M. Stanley, famed Welsh-American explorer of Africa, journalist, and soldier. Autograph letter signed by Stanley in black dip pen, and it is accompanied by the original transmittal envelope as well. The letter is to Sir William Henry Flower the Director of the British Museum thanking him and the Museum who had recently honored him for his work in Africa. Very Good condition. Letter measures 4.5” x 7” when opened and has a fold line down the middle. The envelope measures 3.75” x 4.75”. Sir William Henry Flower (30 November 1831 – 1 July 1899) was an English surgeon, museum curator and comparative anatomist, who became a leading authority on mammals and especially on the primate brain. He supported Thomas Henry Huxley in an important controversy with Richard Owen about the human brain and eventually succeeded Owen as Director of the Natural History Museum in London.
