American-British financier and journalist served as New York state assemblyman and senator before moving to England and acquiring control of numerous newspapers and magazines. Rare ALS, signed “Wm. Astor,” one page both sides, 4 x 6.25, November 27, 1863. In part: “Since I saw you the other evening a person to whom I applied last summer to find a pointer for me has written me to the effect that he has succeeded in finding one…I hope therefore that you will not for the present at least take any steps towards procuring one from England.” In fine condition, with slight edge toning, some creasing, some separation along fold, and a vertical crease affecting one letter of the signature
