Washington Irving, autograph letter signed, 8" x 10", dated November 24, 1848. Addressed to Thomas L. Plowman, Irving responds to a request to use his writings on Christopher Columbus, granting permission and noting details from his own recollections. He remarks, “I recollect you as a fellow boarder… accompanied with your wife and sister, but I may be confusing [you] with another person.” A fine content letter offering both literary and personal reflections. In fine condition, with folds and light toning consistent with age.
Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 – November 28, 1859) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad, and George Washington, as well as several histories of 15th-century Spain that deal with subjects such as Alhambra, Christopher Columbus, and the Moors. Irving served as American ambassador to Spain in the 1840s. In 1826 Irving became a diplomatic attache in Spain, where he gathered material for his History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus (1828), and for two later books;A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada and The Alhambra.
