Autograph letter text in ink, written entirely in the hand of Washington Irving, unsigned, in the third person. The note reads: “Mr. Irving regrets that a previous engagement will prevent his having the pleasure of dining with Mr. Potter on Tuesday next, Thursday Jan. 27th.”
A brief and characteristic social regret, composed in the third person a format Irving frequently employed for formal notes and polite social correspondence.
Washington Irving, author of The Sketch Book, Rip Van Winkle, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, was the first American author to achieve lasting international literary fame.
Presented attractively in a custom-framed and matted display, accompanied by an engraved portrait of Irving and an explanatory caption. The letter itself exhibits light fold lines and mild age toning, consistent with nineteenth-century use, and remains in very good condition.
