Claude Monet Autograph Letter Signed in Purple Ink from Giverny — with Original Mailing Envelope
Claude Monet (1840-1926), the supreme master of Impressionism whose water garden at Giverny became the obsession of his final decades, writes at length in his characteristic purple ink from his famous home. The ALS, dated "Giverny par Vernon / 19 janvier 190[?]," is addressed to a Monsieur Rousseau and spans two pages. The text, written in Monet's hand, discusses quality and arrangements, closing "Claude Monet." The original mailing envelope is addressed: "Monsieur Rousseau / rue de Milan No. 24 / Paris," bearing a Paris postmark and a period French stamp.
Monet's purple ink letters from Giverny are among the most immediately recognizable documents in the history of French art collecting. The Giverny years, spanning from 1883 until his death in 1926, produced not only his greatest paintings but a rich correspondence with dealers, collectors, and fellow artists. Letters with original envelopes intact are considerably scarcer than letters alone.
ALS, two pages, purple ink, each page approximately 5.5 x 8.5 inches, dated 19 January 190[?] ); original mailing envelope with period French stamp and Paris postmark (IMG_214.jpg). Some illegible passages consistent with Monet's rapid hand; light toning; overall very good condition.
