Rare ADS signed 5 times James Buchanon document Ca. 1817 as a 26-year-old lawyer, related to a suit between Barbara Shirk, widow of David Shirk vs. Ulrich Shirk (brother of David) for settlement on debt to the estate for land purchase. The suit was prepared by Buchanan in his hand  with his name within the text 2 times in the front and is signed three times on reverse by Buchanan, the tract was in Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, personal note on the reverse is in Buchanan's hand includes being sent to Jacob Hagey's Tavern, Cocalico Twp., PA, framed in a modern frame with ink and watercolor painting by L. Mozingo (?), 14"x 17" framed; [Note: the document was prepared during Buchanan's years as an attorney prior to public life]; Condition: small central tear/hole in the document

I promise to pay to James Buchanan or his order Eighty dollars without defalcation for value received: and should the plaintiff never recover against the defendant in this cause then I promise to pay to James Buchanan or order Eighty dollars in addition to the above without defalcation for value received. Given under my hand at Lancaster this 20th June 1817.
