Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), the titanic figure of modern sculpture whose "The Thinker" and "The Gates of Hell" permanently altered the course of Western art, signed and dated this striking real-photo postcard of himself seated in his studio. The image shows Rodin in profile in a dark suit, a plaster sculptural group visible on a worktable behind him. He has signed boldly in black ink: "Aug Rodin / 1911." The reverse is a standard French "Carte Postale" back, unused.
By 1911 Rodin was 71 and at the height of his international fame, his studio at Meudon a pilgrimage destination for artists, writers, and collectors from across the world. Signed photographic postcards of this period are among the most visually compelling Rodin autograph items available; this example, self-dated in his own hand, is particularly fine.
Signed real-photo postcard, black ink, approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches, dated 1911; Carte Postale reverse unused (IMG_202.jpg, IMG_203.jpg). Some toning and slight silvering consistent with age; image strong; overall very good condition. Estimate: $3,000-$5,000.
