Pasquale Villari

Pasquale Villari (1827–1917) was an Italian historian, political figure, and prominent intellectual of the nineteenth century. Best known for his influential historical studies of the Italian Renaissance, including The Life and Times of Girolamo Savonarola (1859–1861) and Niccolò Machiavelli and His Times (1877–1882), Villari played an important role in shaping modern historical scholarship in Italy. He also served as a senator in the Kingdom of Italy and held positions in public education and government during the early decades of the unified Italian state.
