A fine New York State military commission appointing Robert W. Atkinson as First Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, New York Guard, with rank from August 9, 1918. Printed on heavy stock in ornate calligraphic letterpress with the New York State arms engraved at upper left, signed boldly in ink by Alfred E. Smith as Governor and countersigned by Charles W. Berry as Adjutant General, dated April 21, 1920, at Albany, with embossed wax seal affixed at lower left.

Together with a handsome Civil War-era naturalization certificate issued by the Superior Court of the City of New York, admitting Margaretha Banger as a Citizen of the United States of America on June 17, 1862, in the eighty-sixth year of Independence, printed in red and blue with the New York State arms at top center within an ornate decorative border, signed in ink by Robert D. Livingston as Clerk of the Court.

Both with folds and minor toning, otherwise fine condition.

Alfred E. Smith (1873–1944) served four terms as Governor of New York and was the Democratic nominee for President in 1928. .
