Typescript article, "The Drama. The Position of the Young Playwright," submitted by an aspiring writer (signed at the end 'John A. Lincoln' [?]), bearing across the head of the first page a scathing autograph annotation in ink, initialled "G.B.S." and dated 12/10/24, in the hand of GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856–1950), Nobel Prize-winning Irish playwright: "This is all tosh: it is not about real categories, but about catchwords of the press. You send such things to editors on the chance of getting a few shillings for them, not to ME." The article argues that the young playwright is to be found 'between the Roads of the Commercial and the Art Drama' and ends with a producer's lament that "all the great men are dead and the better ones are not born yet." Shaw was notorious for returning unsolicited manuscripts with brusque comments, and this is a superb example of his acid wit.
