FILLMORE, MILLARD. ALS as president, May 5, 1851. Enthusiastically accepting an invitation to attend the opening of the New York and Erie Railroad. In Part: "I have your invite of the 3rd with writing me to attend the opening of the New York and Erie railroad on the 14th instant and in that there will be nothing political in the celebration feeling as I do a deep interest in the success of the notable and noble enterprise I am prepared to join with these rejoice in its completion and if nothing shall occur to prevent .....with great pleasure except your invitation should anything here after happened to prevent me from attending I will advise you at the earliest moment ......closing I am yours Millard Fillmore
The Erie Railroad was chartered in 1832, and the first train ran from New York to Lake Erie in 1851, with President Millard Fillmore as a passenger.
