Marc Chagall Typed Letter Signed from Vence, New Year's Eve 1953 — Responding to a Questionnaire Marc Chagall (1887-1985), the Russian-French master whose dreamlike imagery of floating figures, lovers, and village life placed him among the most beloved artists of the 20th century, signed this typed letter on the last day of 1953. The TLS, on printed "Les Collines / Vence (A.-M.)" letterhead and dated 31 Decembre 1953, reads in full: "Cher Monsieur, Merci beaucoup pour votre lettre. Je reponds aux questions que vous m'avez posees et je vous retourne le questionnaire que vous m'avez adresse. Je vous envoie mes meilleurs voeux pour l'annee 1954, et l'assurance de mes sentiments les meilleurs. / Marc Chagall." Chagall was living in Vence on the French Riviera in 1953, a productive and settled period following the upheavals of wartime exile. Signed Chagall letters on his Vence letterhead are consistently sought by collectors; the New Year's Eve date and the 1954 good wishes make this one particularly easy to place in the arc of his life and work. TLS, one page, blue ink signature, approximately 8.5 x 11 inches, dated 31 Decembre 1953; printed "Les Collines / Vence (A.-M.)" letterhead (IMG_227.jpg). Light toning; paper sound; overall very good to fine condition. Estimate: $1,500-$2,500. This item will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from One of a Kind Collectibles.
