Scarce and sought-after partly-printed DS as president signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 21.25 x 16.5, June 19, 1850. A four-language ship's paper issued to "Henry A. Shakley, master or commander of the Ship called William Hamilton…lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for the Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions and utensils for a Whaling Voyage." Boldly signed on the right side by Taylor, and countersigned by Secretary of State John M. Clayton. The white paper seal affixed at center remains fully intact. In fine condition, with some folds partially affecting Taylor's signature. Any Taylor presidential document is quite uncommon, as he served only 16 months before suddenly passing away on July 9, 1850; these highly displayable four-language ship's passes are an especially desirable format.
Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was an American military leader who served as the 12th president of the United States from 1849 until his death in 1850. Taylor was a career officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general and becoming a national hero for his victories in the Mexican–American War. As a result, he won election to the White House despite his vague political beliefs. His top priority as president was to preserve the Union.
