These tickets were sold in one of several lotteries in 1796 whose proceeds were designated for the construction of a canal "through the city of Washington to the Eastern Branch Harbour." These lotteries were not as successful as hoped, with construction not commenced until 1802. The canal was officially opened in 1815 and continued in business spasmodically until the late 1850s when it declined, with the final sections finally being filled in by the 1930s. Signed by Dan S. Carroll of Duddington. Carroll was the son of Charles Carroll.
