KENNEDY, JACQUELIE. First Lady. An interesting lot.
First there is a White House letter from Social Secretary Nancy Tuckerman to A. J. Hendley, Sr. stating that she was sure Mrs. K. would like to receive a copy of “The Great Woman Statesman” and suggesting that if he would call, she would arrange for him to leave a copy at the White House and hoped to meet him then. With the envelope.
Next is a letter dated June 13, 1963, on White House letterhead from Jacqueline Kennedy thanking Mr. Hendley. In part “I know it will give me many hours of pleasure reading this book and I thank you very much for your thought.” Signed Jacqueline Kennedy. With envelope bearing her printed frank.
Then comes a letter on letterhead of Mrs. John Kennedy dated January 20, 1964, to Mr. Hendley stating that Miss Tuckerman remembers the presentation of the volume and says that the signature in question is that of Mrs. Kennedy. Mr. Hendley had offered the letter to Charles Hamilton for sale and it had been rejected as not genuine.
Finally, there is a letter from Mr.Hendley to Hamilton complaining and explaining. At the bottom of his letter, Charles Hamilton has penned “The White House has repeatedly given out inaccurate data regarding signatures of Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy. You have a signature, as explained before, signed for Mrs. K. by a secretary. Sincerely, Charles.” These letters are discussed by Hamilton on pages 56 and 57 of his book “Scribblers and Scoundrels”.
