Commodore in the United States Navy, Commanded U.S. naval warships including USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides") and saw service with the French Republic 1796-1800; the Barbary Wars (1801-1805, 1815); and the War of 1812 (1812-1815), with Great Britain; Commandant of the Washington Navy Yard, and later the Commodore of the Mediterranean Squadron, the Battle of USS Constitution vs HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812, the most important single ship action of the War of 1812 that made Isaac Hull a national hero.
