Stephen Crane ALS. This is the only letter we can find written from Crane as part of the Delta Upsilon House Fraternity, while at his short stay at Syracuse University. He only stayed at Syracuse from January to June 1891.The 20-year-old writer is asking a Miss Yates on a date. Crane died at the very young age of 29, so letters written by him are extremely rare. Letter in full reads:

On Delta Upsilon House stationary in Syracuse NY, written in 1891

My dear Miss Yates I hope you will pardon this superlative amount of assurance I seem to possess, in us venting with pen and the ink; but finding myself unable to call in season before Wednesday next, I trusted that you would not feel offended at these few lines. If you will give me the pleasure of attending with me the rendition of the “ Star Mater” at the musical festival next Wednesday evening in Company with Miss Taylor and Mr. Goodwin I will be grateful. Hoping that I may have the honor I am very truly yours Stephen Crane.

Stephen Crane (November 1, 1871 – June 5, 1900) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism.
