William F. Cody. (1846-1917). American frontiersman and entertainer. He became a scout for the Union army and after the war took a job for a company that supplied meat for railroad construction crews, killing 4280 buffalo during 1867-1868.

ALS, 5.75x9 on pictorial illustrated printed stationery for The New Hoffman House, Madison Square, New York, February 21, 1904 to Bacon. In full, "I have had the worst sorrow of my life. My darling child Arta was my love. I start for Cody 23rd. Will be home a month. Write me there. Your Friend. W. F. Cody." A short, poignant letter referring to the recent death of his daughter Arta. Her death was a major calamity in Cody's life and was at a time when he was in a bitter divorce with his wife. This fueled the fire, but the judges ended up not granting a divorce and the two eventually reconciled and traveled together until Cody's death. Minor age-toning, mailing folds, tiny tear along with onefold, ink smudge to the first letter in name.
