The view from the bow of a captured Confederate gunship is just one of the many photographs from the famous Civil War photographer Mathew B. Brady (ca. 1822 – January 15, 1896). His photos, and exhibit, of the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam is considered a watershed moment for photojournalism, for Americans saw the brutality of the war for the first time. The gunboat in the picture, the CSS Teaser (Teazer) had some notoriety in the war, as both a tender boat for the CSS Merrimack at the battle of Hampton Roads against the USS Monitor, and an aircraft carrier—for surveillance balloons.Title card on back with issuance number, No. 481.
