ALS, 2pp. 8vo, Thanksgiving Day, 1873. To Charles A. Dana, publisher of the New York Sun. " Among the reason for thankfulness today, I emphasize the kindness and courtesy of the Press towards me, during a period of no inconsiderable trouble. This has been specially true of the Sun... I beg of you, dear Sir, to allow me to make a strong expression of my sense of your kindness to me; kindness without impairing that fidelity to truth, which should animate Journalism." Beecher had been under strong attack by Theodore Tilton who accused him of having had relations with his wife, accusation later proved untrue.

Henry Ward Beecher (June 24th, 1813 – March 8, 1887) was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial. His rhetorical focus on Christ's love has influenced mainstream Christianity to this day.
