EDWIN D. MORGAN WRITES TO ASSISTANT ADJUTANT PROVOSTĀ¬GENERAL FREDERICK TOWNSEND CONCERNING A PROMOTION (Lincoln, Abraham)/Edwin Dennison Morgan (1811-83), Governor of New York (1858-62) and chairman of the Republican National Committee (1856-64), where he came to know Lincoln who, in 1865, offered him the position of Secretary of the Treasury, which he declined: ALS as Senator, 1 p., 8 x 5, Washington, 6 February 1865, to Colonel Frederick Townsend in Albany: "Please tell me how matters are getting on with the proposed 5 new Regiments. I wish to have you assigned to the command of them if raised, and your rank made that of Brigadier Genl. But I do not wish to make the application in that form, if the Regiments are not raised .. " During the Civil War Townsend, as colonel of volunteers, organized a regiment in 1861 and took part in the battle of Big Bethel. He later served as a major in the reguĀ¬lar army at Pea Ridge and Stone River.
