Two Rare Pamphlets on Slavery and on Colonization

The first  Pamphlet is an "Address of The Managers of the American Colonization Society to the People of the United States", printed by James C.Dunn, Georgetown, Dated 1832. 16 pages, complete, measuring about 5.5" x 9", untrimmed wove paper "American Colonization Society" Booklet In very Good condition, with map. A rare historically important original Black History Imprint.

The subject of the booklet is the Colonization of Africa by sending back Black America Slaves to their native continent. American Imprints 10899, Dumond p. 12, HSP/LCP Afro-Americana Catalog 377, Sabin 81763

The second Pamphlet is a letter on colonization, addressed to the Rev. Thorton J Mill, by James G Birne, Esq,. published by the Office of the Anti-Slavery Reporter, dated 1834; Birney, James: LETTER ON COLONIZATION, ADDRESSED TO THE REV. THORNTON J. MILLS, CORRESPONDING SECRETARY OF THE KENTUCKY COLONIZATION SOCIETY. New York: Anti-Slavery Reporter, 1834. 12mo, 46pp, stitched in contemporary plain wrappers with the ownership signature of Ebenezer [?] Shedd. Very Good. __ A significant document, first published (according to Dumond) in the Emancipator. Birney-- although "not extensively known in the eastern states" in 1834, as the publisher states-- became an important political figure in the 1840's. As head of the anti-slavery Liberty Party, a precursor of the Republicans, he may have cost Henry Clay the election of 1844 by siphoning off the votes of anti-slavery Whigs. This item shows the early tensions within the Colonization movement. Birney arrays himself against those like Clay (for many years President of the American Colonization Society) who see slavery as only a relative evil, and hence a necessary one under certain conditions, i.e., those prevailing in the U.S. As the clash of political interests heightened sectional differences, colonization was increasingly viewed as mere temporizing with the fundamental evil of slavery.
