Composer who became Columbia University's first professor of music. Paresis made him unable to perform or compose after 1904, and he lapsed into insanity and died at age 47. His farm in Peterborough, N.H., became the MacDowell Colony for artists after his death. ALS signed “E. A. McDowell,” one page one page, 7 x 9, personal letterhead, April 18, 1904. McDowell sends his thanks to a gentleman. In part, “I wish to thank you for the kind interest that prompted you to send me the article by Lessmann - It was a compliment that I appreciated thoroughly.”
