Fleet Admiral Nimitz,(February 24, 1885 – February 20, 1966) was a five-star admiral of the United States Navy. He held the dual command of Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet, for U.S. naval forces and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, for U.S. and Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II. He was the leading U.S. Navy authority on submarines, as well as Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Navigation in 1939.On 2 September 1945 Nimitz signed for the United States when Japan formally surrendered on board the Missouri in Tokyo Bay. On 5 October 1945, which had been officially designated as "Nimitz Day". ALS by Nimitz to a Dr. Downs in reference to serving on an expendable ship during World War II. In part: Glad he survived and returned safely home. He will be sending under separate cover a photograph of a dramatic moment in the war. Signed C.W. Nimitz there is some toning where once framed and attached to card stock board.
