. KENNEDY, JOHN F.,35th" President of the U.S. Two pages (back and front on one 6 1/4 x 9 %" sheet of his United State Senate letterhead) of notes Kennedy made apparently in preparation for a speech. Kennedy writes at the top that the notes were made from A. Lawrence Lowell's "Conflicts of Principle" published by Harvard Press. The notes undoubtedly represent some of Kennedy's political philosophy. In part: "No moral principle in laissez-faire and govt. regulation. We merely want to find proper limit. Vocational and cultural education good. Cultural important so that we may enjoy higher pleasures of life - good literature, the fine arts, music, history, etc. - in short, all those contributions to thought that have slowly raised civilized men above the barbarians. Especially true of women for they determine the culture." His interest in cultural matters was honored the year after his assassination by the establishment of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Included is material related to the provenance of the document.
