TRUMAN, HARRY S, 33rd President of the United States. OS dated 3/30/43. This is a fascinating piece of history that reflects civilian life during World War 11- an Application for Supplemental Mileage Ration for Bess W. Truman's 1940 Chrysler Sedan. Her business address is given as U. S. Senate, Wash. DC. The application was submitted by Hon. Harry S Truman, 4701 Conn. Ave., Washington D.C. and is signed by him. Gas rationing during WWII was primarily for the purpose of conserving tires. Most people got Class A coupons, which permitted the purchase of 3 gallons of gasoline a week. Applications for a supplemental ration were submitted by people who needed their cars for business. It would appear that Harry used Bess's car to go to his job as Senator. The document shows that the Ration Board granted the applicant a Class C book of ration coupons.
