Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. Manuscript DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8 x 4.75, June 10, 1776. Ellsworth directs the Treasurer to pay “Capt. Joseph Griswold and Elihu Hide the sum of Sixty eight pounds ten shillings & nine pence half penny money for purchase & processing of One hundred ninety seven pounds Salt Petre.” In fine condition, with bisecting folds and a bit of scattered light toning.
