A warm and witty autograph letter signed by Associate Justice Joseph Story, measuring approximately 5" x 6.25", written to Mrs. Poinsett, wife of diplomat and future Secretary of War Joel R. Poinsett. In this charming letter, Story graciously thanks her for sending a recipe for Charlotte Russe;a dish she had promised at a previous dinner party he fondly recalls as & exceedingly pleasant.” With elegant prose, Story notes that he had carefully saved the memory among his “red letter calendar,” and muses on the virtues of mastering the;home department; declaring that “every gentleman ought to be ambitious.; He humorously references Dr. SamuelJohnson's love for fine dining, hoping that in presenting the dessert, he; shall hope to stand well” in his household.
Beautifully preserved, the letter is in fine condition with strong ink contrast and only light handling wear, adding to its appeal as both a personal and historical artifact.
Signed Joseph Story at the conclusion. A superb example of Story's intellect and personality, rarely found in such a delightfully domestic context.
