A remarkable pair of original 1903 sepia-toned cabinet photographs, each individually inscribed on their bottom mounts to Lieutenant J.W. Crawford by Admiral George Dewey, hero of Manila Bay, and his wife, Mildred McLean Dewey, a prominent Washington socialite and heiress.The first photograph features Admiral George Dewey (1837–1917) in full-dress naval uniform, standing with ceremonial sword in hand. Boldly inscribed in ink:
“To Lieut. J. W. Crawford with the warm regards of George Dewey.”
Image bears the photographer’s imprint: Copyrighted 1903, Clinedinst, Washington D.C.The companion photograph shows Mildred Dewey standing gracefully beside an ornately carved chair, dressed in a high-collared Edwardian gown. Her portrait is inscribed:
“For Lieutenant Crawford, with the kindest regards of Mildred Dewey, July 1903.”Both images are handsomely mounted together and present a rare and intimate glimpse into the social and military circles of post–Spanish-American War America. Each photograph is approx. 4.25" x 6.5"; overall matted to a larger size.
