1863 American Express Stock Certificate Signed by Wells and Fargo
This fine 1863 American Express stock certificate measures 11.625" x 8.25" It is made out to Charles S. Rinball of New York for 4 shares. The certificate is boldly signed by both founders of the company, Henry Wells and William G. Fargo, and countersigned by Treasurer Alex Holland. The graphics are outstanding, depicting a train, roundhouse, ships, a delivery wagon, a safe, cotton and crated goods, and a guard dog labeled "Safety & Dispatch." The stock has cancellations over signatures. Despite this, it remains an attractive stock certificate. The certificate shows paper loss on the edges.
An 1869 American Merchants Union Stock Certificate signed by William G. Fargo as President, E. P. Ross as Treasurer, and J. N. Knapp as Secretary. Measuring 12" x 8.5", this certificate (No. 2776) was issued for 50 shares as part of a stock issue of 180,000 shares, with each share valued at $100. Both the Knapp and Fargo signatures feature cancellation holes but remain bold and legible.
Stock Certificate issued by the Merchants Union Express Company before it merged with American Express Company. Measuring approximately 12” x 8.25”, it was issued on November 8, 1867, for 10 shares. It is signed by ''J.N. Knapp'' as Secretary and ''A. P. Ross'' as President, although each features cancellation holes. It features a classic central vignette showing an express wagon full of freight being pulled by four racing horses with a freight train, a ship, and a factory in the background.
