Partly-printed DS, signed “J. D. Rockefeller,” one page, 12 x 7.75, February 26th, 1880. Stock certificate for 50 shares in the Standard Oil Trust issued to George H. Lincoln signed in ink by Rockefeller as president, John Dustin Archbold as assistant secretary, and Joel Francis Freeman as treasurer. The original receipt remains attached to the left edge. In fine condition.
John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) was a business magnate and philanthropist whose Standard Oil empire made him the wealthiest man in the world. John Dustin Archbold (1848-1916) was one of the United States' earliest oil refiners; he became one of John D. Rockefeller's closest associates after his small company was bought out by Standard Oil, rising to vice president and effectively running the firm from 1896 until his death. A fantastic stock certificate representing a small portion of Rockefeller's vast holding in Standard Oil—a rare and desirable example given that it was issued to the company's president.
