A partly-printed presidential appointment, signed by James Buchanan and dated April 7, 1858, naming Anijah W. Chapin as Deputy Postmaster of Springfield, Massachusetts. Also signed by Secretary of State Lewis Cass, the document measures 9" x 15.5" and features an embossed presidential seal at the lower left. Elegantly presented with red matting and a frame measuring 13.5" x 20". The document shows typical fold marks with archival tape repair to the verso, but remains boldly signed and visually appealing—an excellent example from Buchanan’s administration on the eve of the Civil War.
